1 Enoch — R. H. Charles (1913)

1913 · English

Robert Henry Charles’s original English translation of 1 Enoch in The Apocrypha and Pseudepigrapha of the Old Testament in English, volume II: Pseudepigrapha (Oxford: Clarendon Press,1913), printed pages188–281. This is the complete English primary translation, including the Noah fragment within chapters106–107 and final chapter108, kept distinct from Charles’s1917 edition. Reuses the existing1Enoch work record. All94 retained scans were compared visually. Page-based reading portions preserve source headings, verse figures, critical brackets/daggers, source gaps and divergent names. All English parallel witness readings remain separate under their printed labels. Original Greek comparison on254 and Latin comparison on278–279, running headers, marginal references, commentary and note calls are excluded; this does not claim to reproduce the scholarly apparatus. Printed line/page breaks and wrap hyphens remain; italic/bold emphasis is plain text. Critical corner marks use Unicode corners; unusual unpaired marks and printed verse order remain. The Noah fragment is not represented as the complete independent Book of Noah. BnF identifies Charles,1855–1931; the original1913 US published-work term and Charles’s ordinary UK term have expired (UK ordinary term through2001). 2 Baruch / Syriac Apocalypse of Baruch — R. H. Charles (1913)

1913 · English

Robert Henry Charles’s original English translation of the Syriac Apocalypse of Baruch, or Second Baruch, in The Apocrypha and Pseudepigrapha of the Old Testament, volume II (Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1913), complete primary printed pages 481–526. All forty-six pages and the original title/contributor leaves were checked against the University of Toronto scan. All eighty-seven original chapters are retained, including the epistle to the nine and a half tribes in chapters 78–86, its dispatch in chapter 87, and the final closing notice. This is distinct from the biblical Book of Baruch and the Greek Apocalypse, or Third Baruch. The source title’s Greek-to-Syriac statement and the attribution to Baruch are historical literary claims, not established authorship or transmission. The English comparison of the Oxyrhynchus Greek fragment printed beside the Syriac translation on pages 487–490 is retained in clearly labeled separate blocks; the source credits Bernard Pyne Grenfell and Arthur Surridge Hunt, Oxyrhynchus Papyri III (1903), pages 3–7. The preliminary introduction pages 470–480, separate scholarly footnotes and their calls, the Greek diplomatic transcription, marginal editorial source classifications, running headers and printer footers are omitted. Original source headings, chapter/verse figures, poetry, supplied passages, brackets, gaps and daggered uncertainties remain. Scan errors and displaced lines/figures were repaired directly from the original pages; wrapped words are rejoined and figures crossing a split word precede the whole word. Printed historical opinions and difficult readings are preserved without filling gaps from scholarly notes. The original 1913 United States published-work term and the identified ordinary UK terms of Charles (1855–1931), Grenfell (1869–1926) and Hunt (1871–1934) have expired; this is not a worldwide copyright determination. No modern translation or revised edition is included. Free download alone is not treated as commercial permission.

Acts of Paul, including Paul and Thecla — M. R. James (1924)

1924 · English

Montague Rhodes James’s original 1924 English presentation of the Acts of Paul in The Apocryphal New Testament, Oxford: Clarendon Press, printed pages 270–299. The original 1924 title and all thirty source pages were checked directly in the University of Illinois scan. James explicitly follows Carl Schmidt’s reconstruction for the defective Coptic episodes and the Greek text for Paul and Thecla, retaining source alternatives and his own discussion. James (1862–1936), Schmidt (1868–1938), Adolf von Harnack (1851–1930) and William Mitchell Ramsay (1851–1939) are credited where discussed. The original 1924 United States term and these scholars’ ordinary UK terms have expired. No worldwide term assertion. This reproduces the complete identified historical main-text presentation, with its source gaps and summaries; running headers, printer footers, separate footnotes/calls and documented scan artifacts are excluded. Small-capital interpolations in the correspondence with the Corinthians are represented in capitals. No later revision or new reconstruction is reproduced. Acts of Pilate, Part I — M. R. James (1924)

1924 · English

Montague Rhodes James’s original 1924 English presentation of Acts of Pilate, Part I, in The Apocryphal New Testament (Oxford: Clarendon Press), printed pages 94–117, ending before the Part II heading. The original title page and all twenty-four source pages were checked in the University of Illinois scan. This edition includes the complete identified Greek A translation, its introduction and prologue, alternative endings, and James’s selective review and translated additions from Greek B. It is not a complete translation of Greek B. James (1862–1936) cites Tischendorf (1815–1874), Revillout (1843–1913), Conybeare (1856–1924) and Rahmani (1848–1929) for the historical Greek, Latin, Coptic, Armenian and Syriac sources. The original 1924 United States copyright term and these scholars’ ordinary UK terms have expired; this is not a worldwide copyright determination. Separate footnotes and their reference marks, running headers and printer’s footer are omitted. Source alternatives, uncertainties and James’s commentary remain. The attribution to Nicodemus is historical, not established authorship. Part II, the Descent into Hell, is outside this edition and is available in three separately identified editions. Acts of Thomas — M. R. James (1924)

1924 · English

Montague Rhodes James’s original 1924 English presentation of the Acts of Thomas in The Apocryphal New Testament (Oxford: Clarendon Press), printed pages 364–438. The original title page and all seventy-five source pages were checked in the University of Illinois scan. This edition includes the introduction, thirteen Acts, the Hymn of the Soul with all 105 printed verse numbers, the Martyrdom through section 170, and the closing Greek/Syriac colophon. James translated from the Greek text edited by Max Bonnet (1841–1917), consulting the Syriac renderings of William Wright (1830–1889), Agnes Smith Lewis (1843–1926) and Anthony Ashley Bevan (1859–1933). The signed main-text note by Francis Crawford Burkitt (1864–1935) is retained with his credit. James’s witness labels, alternatives, uncertainties and changes of manuscript basis remain. He expressly omits a separate Syriac Song of Praise; this edition preserves his complete identified presentation and does not claim to translate every ancient witness in full. The original 1924 United States copyright term and these scholars’ ordinary UK terms have expired; this is not a worldwide copyright determination. Separate footnotes and their reference marks, running headers and printer’s footers are omitted. Original page, section and poem numbers remain; scan errors have been corrected and wrapped words rejoined. Free download alone is not treated as commercial permission.

The original 1924 title and all thirty-one source pages were checked directly in the University of Illinois scan. Fragments of a Zadokite Work / Damascus Document — R. H. Charles (1913)

1913 · English

Robert Henry Charles’s original English translation, Fragments of a Zadokite Work, in The Apocrypha and Pseudepigrapha of the Old Testament, volume II (Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1913), complete primary printed pages 799–834. All thirty-six pages and the original title and contributor leaves were checked against the University of Toronto scan; the contributor list explicitly credits Charles. This is a historical Cairo Genizah witness to the Damascus Document, rather than the full modern Dead Sea Scrolls or Qumran corpus. All twenty source chapter divisions and both parallel Text A and Text B witnesses are retained, with the witnesses clearly separated and labeled. Source gaps, missing passages, supplied words, brackets, verse figures, daggers, poetic lines and difficult readings remain. The absent verse 14 figure in Text B on page 817 is not invented. The 1913 editorial headings, dates and historical claims are retained as part of the historical edition. Introduction pages 785–798, separate scholarly footnotes and their calls, running headers, printer footers and the scholarly Appendix on IX. 22a at page 834 are excluded. The Appendix’s proposed smoother reading is not substituted for either daggered primary witness. OCR errors, missing short lines, displaced source figures and scrambled column order were repaired from the scans; wrapped words are rejoined and a figure crossing a split word precedes the whole word. The original 1913 United States published-work term and Charles’s ordinary UK term (1855–1931) have expired; this is not a worldwide copyright determination. These are seven components of one Ahikar collection. The source does not supply the complete Slavonic or Old Turkish versions, a complete Ethiopic narrative, the whole Aramaic papyrus, or the whole Life of Aesop. Reading transcription arranged by actual printed page, preserving source narrative and verse figures, brackets and fragmentary gaps. Line-wrap words and spacing are normalized. Page units can begin or end mid-sentence; no canonical verse alignment is invented. Critical apparatus, including the long Armenian MS. Canon variants, and the Greek original column are excluded; the facsimile remains linked.

Testament of Job — Kaufmann Kohler (1897)

1897 · English

Kaufmann Kohler’s original English translation, Testament of Job, in Semitic Studies in Memory of Rev. Dr. Alexander Kohut, edited by George Alexander Kohut (Berlin: S. Calvary & Co., 1897), complete primary printed pages 314–338. The original title, article credit and all twenty-five English translation pages were checked against the University of California scan. All twelve source chapters and the final Amen are retained, including the hymn, chorus and the account of Job’s daughters. The source repeats I.10, omits the periods after III.12 and III.35, and contains inconsistent spellings and difficult readings; these remain as printed. The original XI.26 word ‘donology’ and XII.18 figure 255 are retained. Supplied brackets, original verse figures and poetic lines remain. The introductory article on pages 264–289, Greek transcription on pages 290–313, separate scholarly footnotes and reference calls, running headers and footers, and later handwritten reader marks are outside this reading edition. Kaufmann Kohler (1843–1926) is identified by the American Jewish Archives at Hebrew Union College. Testaments of the Twelve Patriarchs and Source Appendices — R. H. Charles (1913)

1913 · English

Robert Henry Charles’s original English translations in The Apocrypha and Pseudepigrapha of the Old Testament in English, volume II: Pseudepigrapha (Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1913), printed pages 296–367. The original contributor list credits Charles with the Testaments of the XII Patriarchs. Three distinct work records preserve the main Twelve Testaments (296–360), Appendix I’s late Hebrew Testament of Naphtali (361–363), and Appendix II’s Aramaic and Greek source fragments related to Levi and Jubilees (364–367). The appendix texts are not silently merged into the main collection or Leviticus. All 72 retained source scans were compared visually; OCR repairs, extraction boundaries and manual parallel-column transcriptions are recorded. All printed primary witness readings are retained separately under their source labels; labels followed by a colon and Left reading are editorial orientation. Page-based reading portions preserve original headings, verse figures, critical brackets/daggers, source gaps, partial-word parentheses, word repetitions and divergent names. Printed line/page breaks and wrap hyphens remain. Running headers, commentary, marginal parallel references and superscript note calls are excluded; printed italic/bold emphasis is plain text. The meaningful Greek-only verses32b–66 heading and the repeated Cambridge verse66 are retained. Source critical corner marks are represented with Unicode corners; unusual unpaired/curved marks are retained rather than balanced by invention. This edition includes the complete primary translations as printed, not modern reconstructions of missing fragments. BnF identifies Charles,1855–1931. The original1913 US published-work term and Charles’s ordinary UK term have expired (UK ordinary term through2001); no worldwide determination or grant of rights in modern scans/additions. Robert Henry Charles’s original English translation, The Ascension of Isaiah (London: Adam and Charles Black, 1900), complete primary printed pages 1–82. All eighty-two translation pages, the original title leaf and the source symbol legend were checked against the Cornell University scan. All eleven chapters, the separately printed vision heading and the final colophon are retained. Original proper names, repeated words, verse figures, gaps and uncertain readings remain. Introduction, separate scholarly footnotes and apparatus, marginal source classifications, running headers and footers, handwritten reader marks, original-language texts on pages 83–139 and the separate Greek Legend on pages 141–148 are outside this reading edition. The Book of Jasher (New York: M. M. Noah and A. S. Gould, 1840). Complete principal narrative on printed pages 1–267, chapters I–XCI, ending at XCI.17 and THE END. The English translator is unnamed in the printing and translator preface; historical attribution to Moses Samuel (1795–1860) is supported by the Jewish Encyclopedia. The publishers are not credited as translators. This medieval Hebrew Sefer ha-Yashar narrative tradition is distinct from the lost biblical Book of Jashar and Jacob Ilive’s work. All primary pages were compared with the printing. Original chapter headings, printed verse figures, repeated or irregular numbering, wording and closing are retained. Line wrapping, whitespace and 20 verified cross-page word breaks are normalized. Publisher front matter, certifications, prefaces and editorial notes are excluded. The Cave of Treasures — E. A. Wallis Budge (1927)

1927 · English

The Book of the Cave of Treasures, translated from the Syriac text of British Museum MS Add.25875 by Sir E. A. Wallis Budge (London: The Religious Tract Society,1927), complete main translation, printed43–241. Every one of the199primary pages has been visually collated and the assembled text read. This edition preserves the six major source divisions, subheadings, manuscript folios and variants, supplied words, gaps, quoted lament and original difficult readings. Separate comparative notes, archaeological contributions, Babylonian zodiac table, photographs, plates and appendices, including the separate Testament of Adam, are excluded. The manuscript prayer attributes the work to Ephrem; Budge questions that attribution in his original preface, and this edition does not present it as established authorship. This is historical Syriac Christian literature, not a canonical Bible translation. The University of Cambridge Fitzwilliam Museum identifies Budge as1857–1934. Chapter XXXI is identified from the printing despite an OCR misreading; chapter XLII has no separate printed title. MUR1851

The Syriac New Testament — James Murdock (1851)

1851 · English

James Murdock, The New Testament, or the Book of the Holy Gospel of Our Lord and Our God, Jesus the Messiah (New York: Stanford and Swords, 1851). Complete principal English translation, all 27 books and 260 chapters, compared throughout printed pages 1–471. The original 27 book subscriptions and final doxology are retained separately as source paratext. This is the original 1851 printing, distinct from the site’s 1852-based digital edition. Original book and chapter headings, paragraphs, wording, brackets, critical marks and printed numbering irregularities are retained; source verse figures remain within whole chapters, without imposing modern Greek verse alignment. Murdock’s preface names the British and Foreign Bible Society’s London 1816 and 1826 Syriac texts, with Leusden and Schaaf (1717) and Gutbir (1664) consulted. Buchanan and Lee prepared Syriac editions; they are not English co-translators. His appendix discusses 2 Peter, 2 and 3 John, Jude and Revelation separately: the edition does not describe all 27 books as a single original Peshitta text, or all five supplementary books as exclusively Philoxenian. Historical source opinions and claims in headings and subscriptions are preserved as source wording, not independently asserted facts. Translator introduction, lexical margins, footnotes and historical appendices are excluded and disclosed. Murdock lived 1776–1856. The original 1851 publication exceeds assessed US published-work and ordinary UK author/layout terms; scan access alone is not permission.
